I don’t know how long this TV Binge Session is going to last… But it’s somehow still going. I must admit I’m the key demographic for targeted advertising. I really am a sucker. Maggie kept showing up on my Hulu page and so I finally gave in and gave it a shot.
Way back when I was a huge fan of Charmed and I love a good supernatural-type show… Including Supernatural (Jensen Ackles, yes please!). And I love a good light-hearted show. So this seemed like a great fit. It’s a quick half-hour comedy following a psychic who starts to get glimpses into her own future. There are 13 episodes in the first season which you can binge in one sitting like I did, and it goes by pretty quick.
Maggie is cute, quirky and an easy watch. I can’t say I was blown away by the show. To the point, I don’t know that I would watch it again if the was picked up for another season. The overall premise of the show kicks off with Maggie seeing a future with a guy she runs into at a party. And even though she shouldn’t be using her powers for her personal life, it keeps happening. The decisions she makes keep being influenced by her visions, which you know, is precisely why she shouldn’t be seeing them. The interesting bit about psychic powers on this show is that if she sees something it will happen. So it is interesting to see her visions and then ultimately see how things unfold over the course of the show.
My main gripe with the show is that I didn’t particularly feel attached to any of the characters. They are all… mediocre. Maggie’s parents are fun[ny]. Her dad is played by Chris Elliott… AKA Roland Schitt… of Schitt’s Creek. And he’s just as funny and weird on this show as he was on Schitt’s Creek, and I do appreciate that! Kerri Kenney plays Maggie’s mom, and she is equally as funny and odd. The rest of the characters are just okay. I didn’t fall in love with anyone in particular. I was expecting a little bit more, even if just in character development.
Maggie was an easy watch, something you can definitely have on in the background. The show was cute, but not ground breaking. There’s a lot of great shows out right now, most are very true to the typical ‘drama’ and ‘comedy’ formats we know. As much as I love the shows I’ve been writing about til this one much better, and recommend them over this show, Maggie is different. It’s not trying to be anything but a charming, fun watch. Give it a go if you need something light, otherwise there are plenty of other great options these days!
