What a pleasant surprise!! I’m a huge fan of cute chick flicks/rom-coms, it’s been a while since I saw a really good one. And an Indian-American one on top of it, bonus points!! Wedding Season recently dropped on Netflix, it was a perfect weekend watch.
The movie follows Asha, an independent boss babe, who is getting pressured by her family to get married. Something all of us Indians know all too well. I mean how hard I dodge the whole situation is really amazing. She reluctantly meets a guy her Mom found on a Shaadi-esque site, Ravi. Even though she isn’t looking for a husband, she does want her mom to get off her back. So in the midst of a full wedding season, she convinces Ravi to fake date her. And then a typical rom-com ensues.
It’s a pretty standard format, but I actually think this is my favorite ‘modern’/’Indian-American’ rom-com. I appreciated that Asha was successful and driven in her career. Even though being successful is expected, it can also backfire in the culture for women given you aren’t married. Also, the overall perception within the ‘community’ was captured well for both Asha and Ravi. Asha for simply not finding someone quick enough, especially after a breakup. And Ravi because he didn’t have a ‘good’ job. A lot of what this generation of Indian Americans goes through was captured pretty well.
I was not familiar with Pallavi Sharda who plays Asha before watching this movie. Safe to say I’m a fan! I thought she did a great job as a leading lady, and she is absolutely stunning! Suraj Sharma has continued to make a name for himself in the industry, and I’m happy to see more of him! He was also great and charming in this movie. The cast overall was great!
The only thing I did not like was Priya’s American boyfriend, Nick. The actor was fine, but they really had him be real dumb. And I get it, but it was just too much. Aside from that, it was a very cute, light-hearted, chick-flick. Like I said, pretty standard/formulaic, but for a chill Netflix evening, it’s a fun watch!
