Growing up I was convinced I’d move to LA. I wanted to work in TV and movies, doing what – who knows, but that was the dream. Not going to lie, I’d still love to do some kind of work on TV and movies and I still don’t have any skill sets for it. Then I went to LA for the first time, maybe 5 or more years ago. And it just wasn’t my vibe. I feel like I said this about Miami too, I swear there are places I actually enjoy! Anywhos, much like Miami, it’s not particularly a place I was dying to go back to, but of course, I found myself there a few times more.
Over the course of a few months at the end of 2021, I ended up back in LA a few times for work – which was pretty cool because that was on my short list of things I wanted to do while I was at that job. I was pretty much done after that. But… A couple of my cousins and I try to take trips each year and last year’s trip was… yup, you guessed it, we ended up in LA.
I will say, much like any major city – including Miami and LA – they are so big and popular that each time you come you could have a completely different agenda! So lucky for me, there are plenty of restaurants and coffee shops to try for the first time.
When I’m on these trips I usually have an idea of a restaurant or activity I definitely want to check out, will go do that, and then will look up what else there is in the area. On this particular day, I was hanging out solo during a day off during the work trip. I had heard about this Thai restaurant – side note, Thai food is my favorite – that Anthony Bourdain had raved about Sapp Coffee Shop. So that was the day’s main attraction – a review for another day. Sapp was a cash-only spot and I had just enough for my main dish. I wanted a beveragino so I did a quick search to see what was around and I found that just a few steps away was Obet & Del’s’. And that’s how we got to today’s review.
I recall the barista being super friendly and us having a nice lil convo about how I randomly stumbled in as I was ordering. I loved that the menu had Asian inspo being in the heart of Thai Town. I ended up getting the Filipino Iced Coffee and a Thai Tea (without milk – since I knew the iced coffee was coming as is). The Filipino Iced Coffee looked gorgeous with the ube, it had that ombre look. I unfortunately wasn’t the biggest fan, I don’t recall if it was the flavor or just being too strong for me. I did rather enjoy the Thai Tea – which can also be strong – but without the milk or condensed milk, was rather refreshing and flavorful. If I were to go back, I may just try the Thai Tea as a latte, which is the actual menu item. I’d also be curious to try their matcha!
Overall, I’m glad I found this spot, one I may not have otherwise discovered if I wasn’t on a constant quest for good Thai food. And listen, I know I’m not going to love everything I ever get, but that’s half the fun of trying something new. Sometimes it’s meh and sometimes I find my new favorite thing! And for me, it was pretty 50/50 at Obet & Del’s. I really did love the atmosphere of the place. So if you are in Thai Town and in the mood for some caffeine, I definitely recommend stopping in!
