When in Rome… Go to a fun bar! During my time in Rome, even though I did research, for food and drinks we just kind of went where the night took us. While we were there I did do some more research for a good bar, just to make sure we got a feel for what nightlife in Italy looks like. So on our second day in Rome, we ended our night at Drink Kong, it just looked like the vibe I wanted from what I saw online.
It’s definitely a trendy spot with the decor and even the way the menu is set up. The place was pretty packed too. Seemed like a good mix of locals and tourists. I did really enjoy the vibe as I thought I would, but it was definitely different than the other spots we stopped at for drinks. This place was trying to be a vibe, a more modern vibe at that, it reminded me of fancy cocktail bars I’ve gone to here in the States. Most of the other places we went to in Rome were more laid back, some just as busy. I don’t know that I would have just stumbled on Drink Kong based on the places we went, we had to take a taxi to and from.
Being that it is a cocktail bar, the drinks are on the expensive side. I obviously went for tequila-based drinks as I do. I tried 2 different ones, starting with the Formula. As I mentioned the menu is set up very fancy as well, there are four ‘elements’ to each drink, so you can see where your drink lies in the spectrum between Acid, Sweet, Bitter & ‘Kong Factor’. The Formula ranked higher on Sweet and Kong Factor with a touch of Acid. It rang up to 16 euros, but it was a great drink. I wanted to try their Magma drink but unfortunately, they did not have it available. So I opted for Big Trouble in Oaxaca (17 euros), which actually fell in about the same spectrum as my last drink. It had Mezcal, and was just as good as the first drink! They have a very Asian-inspired food menu, we shared some edamame with Shichimi pepper (which actually had a kick).
As we waited for our taxi, we had a tequila shot for the road, that ended up being on the house. Lovely way to end off your night on vacation. Yes, the drinks are pricey. No, it’s not necessarily an authentic Rome/Italy experience. It is a great cocktail bar with a cool vibe that’s worth checking out.
