This was our first stop on the trip! It was a location on the list we got from our friend from back in the day. It is definitely in a touristy area of Amsterdam, but that’s where we spent most of our time. We even stumbled on one of the many duck stores which was right next door.
Het Lagerhuys is a lowkey gastropub. I don’t know if it’s cause we were there in the middle of a weekday, but it was empty. To the point, the guy working saw me poke in and had to wave me in cause I wasn’t sure if they were open. I’d like to hope this place is popping any other time of day cause I really liked it.
They had a great extensive list of beers on tap and it’s offered in different sizes which I appreciate. So you can try a few or just get a full pint of something. My friend and I got 2 different ports they had available and they were both really good. I’m glad they offer the smaller sizes cause I love ports, but they can be heavy so it was the perfect amount.
I also tried Bitterballen, which is one of the Amsterdam/Dutch-specific foods I had on my list to try. My friend is vegetarian and they had a vegetarian version of the Bitterballen too that she tried along with a fennel soup. I will say our whole time in Amsterdam, all the menus had vegetarian items marked clearly and everyone had options, which was awesome. Most places are getting better with it, but I remember on our Portugal trip my friend had to look more closely and ask restaurants to make sure much more cause it wasn’t obvious. I will say I enjoyed the food in Portugal overall much more though.
Anyway, I will say I liked the Bitterballen, I didn’t love it. This was the only one I ordered during my trip. The flavor was actually pretty good, but there was something about the consistency that wasn’t my favorite. My friend did like her veggie version. And she liked the bread with her soup and said the soup was okay.
I would recommend this spot for tourists and locals. Totally go here for a beer, an app, and chill with friends. It’s nothing fancy and no frills, but solid.
