Margo’s | An Amsterdam Story

I found this little modern bakery on my Google searches. I like to see what is near areas I have plans in so if I need to stop in real quick I have options. This spot had really good reviews and was a couple minutes away from the Anne Frank House. We popped in for breakfast before we visited the house.

It’s a super small storefront on a quiet street. The place was steadily packed, but it was tucked away off of the main streets. And it was more of a grab-and-go spot, aside from a bit of windowsill space. I don’t think is really meant for people to sit and eat, but that is what we did. My eyes were delighted by all the pastries, they were all so beautiful. I literally wanted to try everything, but I needed a quick breakfast and needed to land on something.

Something I think I knew before, but was reminded when I just checked their website is that they are 100% vegan. Which I think is great. I love to see plant-based options around. My friend is vegetarian, so it’s nice to just have places where she doesn’t have to think twice about what she orders. My friend got the cheese croissant, which looked great as well. It was a rather drippy croissant, so just keep in mind you’ll need some napkins. She enjoyed it with a Jasmine Tahini Latte. I was originally gonna order that latte and then I ended up ordering the chai, which I wish I hadn’t. This seemed to be a common pattern with me on this Amsterdam trip, I kept ordering the wrong things. I usually reserve my chai drinking to at home or at my family’s place, because ya know, I’m Indian and we actually know how to make chai. I had high hopes for this one but unfortunately, it was just kind of watery and not it. My friend did enjoy her latte, and it sounded interesting so I hope it was good!

I should have gone with my heart and ordered one of the gorgeous sweet croissants my eyes were drawn to. But I ended up with the ham & cheese croissant, that I was recommended. For being vegan, the croissant had the right flakiness and texture. I couldn’t tell at all that the ham & cheese was vegan, you could have fooled me that it was real meat and dairy cheese. Once I got to the filling part, I enjoyed it. The croissant on its own – I would much rather have had a non-vegan one. But if I was vegan, this would be absolutely fantastic. Oddly enough though, it wasn’t the lack of butter taste I was missing, rather, I would have just liked a bit more salt in the croissant.

The folks who worked there were super sweet and helpful. It’s a very cute bakery and conveniently located. I think it’s worth trying out and obviously, a great option if you are vegan. I was a bit disappointed in my picks, but I’d like to think I would have liked some of the other items. I’m still kicking myself for not trying the sweet pastries that were calling my name!
