I have no idea how to pronounce the name of this place. This was another spot on the list our old friend shared with us. We stopped by on our first night in Amsterdam, kicking off the trip on the right foot!
I wouldn’t say Wynand Fockink is a proper bar. It’s more of an experience. It’s a small tight spot, with super attentive bartenders. You basically tell the bartender your palate preference and they offer you a taste to see if you want a full glass. I only tried a couple and ultimately had a sweet, Bailey’s adjacent liqueur. My friend ended up trying a Netherlands staple, genever.
We both enjoyed the experience. I think it is a bit touristy, but also a hole in the wall. I mean I literally almost walked right past it, even with the bright neon sign. I much more enjoyed the experience than the actual drinks. It was literally just sipping on some straight liqueur, which isn’t my thing. I’m much more of a cocktail girly. Since the one I got was super sweet it was easy to drink. My friend’s genever, which is a gin-based drink, was reminiscent of a scotch drink which was up her alley.
I’m glad we stopped by. It was unique and fun. You have to take a ‘bow’ for your first sip because they fill it to the point it overflows just a tad. If you are in the area, a few minutes from the Redlight District, stop by. I wouldn’t say it’s a must, but if you stop by I think you’ll be glad you did.
