Decision fatigue is so real when it comes to watching TV. I feel like we’re so close to just going back to how it used to be and I’m kind of waiting for it. Like I just saw that my Amazon Prime Video will have ads now, even though I have Amazon Prime… It’s going to be an upcharge to not see ads. Please, just take one set of my money and give me ALL the content. It’s getting out of hand. If we’re being honest, I usually just end up on YouTube.
However, I saw a post on this show and I was intrigued. The Brother’s Sun is a new dramedy available on Netflix. It follows a family with ties to the Taiwanese triad who were separated years back and recently brought together. The father and eldest brother, Charles remain together in Taiwan while the mother (played by the fantastic Michelle Yeoh), and the younger brother, Bruce move to the U.S. and reside in California.
The show starts with the daddy Sun being attacked and the eldest Charles going to the U.S. to protect their mother. They are trying to figure out who is behind the attack. I’d say the heart of the show is really around these two brothers who were raised in completely different lives and didn’t have any contact after they were separated, finally reuniting. Their dynamic is so much fun to watch.
I really fell in love with the brotherly bonding and bickering. Charles is basically trained to be an assassin, he is super serious but has a love of baking. Clearly showing that he was forced into this life, but he takes the family business very seriously. Bruce’s passion is to be a stand-up comedian and is rather sheltered and sweet, so people don’t take him super seriously. I thoroughly loved them both in their own ways and a few of the side characters. My favorite side characters were Blood Boots, May/June & as much as he annoyed me sometimes, TK was also great comedic relief. As awesome as Michelle Yeoh is, I didn’t love her character. Badass yes, but I just didn’t love a lot of her interactions.
There were some plot lines that I figured out right off the bat. Honestly a lot of the major ones. But it was still entertaining and engaging. This was the first show I really enjoyed in a while and truly binge-watched. If you like silly comedy with action and family drama, I’d recommend throwing it on.
