This has become a staple happy hour spot for my friends and I. They have a great happy hour at the bar, which goes for a decent time, from 4-7PM. A good mix of food and drinks on the happy menu. Actually, a good time to disclaimer, it’s the only menu I’ve tried here. They have an extensive menu otherwise, but I’ve only tried the happy hour menu.

The Parking: Voodoo is situated in one of the many sections of Sand Lake in Doctor Phillips. There’s plenty of parking in this lot. Sometimes you just need to be aware of which spots they have reserved for valet, but plenty of self-parking options. And of course, a valet is available if you’re fancy like that.

The Vibe: It’s a moody, gothic vibe with a touch of kitchiness. I love the stained glass windows at the bar; it’s gorgeous. The back room with the stage has crucifixes everywhere. Always dimly lit with velvet cheetah print or purple seats. It could easily be considered over the top, but I find the servers and the overall atmosphere to be chill, making it a great spot to hang. And shoutout to the server who’s become our regular and within a couple visits had our order down. Excellent service !

The Drinks: There is a decent happy hour drink menu. Great for folks like my friends who love an old-fashioned. There are three different old-fashioned options. My friends usually get the smoked option and love it. I’ve tried Black Magic Lemonade, which isn’t for me, but not necessarily bad. I know I don’t like herbally things and was concerned about the torched rosemary, it just didn’t do it for me. So I’ve pretty exclusively gotten the margarita. Which is a standard, well-made marg.

The Food: We usually get the happy hour oysters, which are fantastic. We’ve tried the Rockefeller wood-fired oysters, which are good, but we can never go wrong with the raw oysters. I have also tried the deviled eggs, which were good too. Now… the buttermilk biscuits are phenomenal. It comes with three big, pillowy biscuits. They have a nice crisp on the outside and are fluffy, buttery, and delightful throughout. Highly recommend these. And if you happen to have space, the beignets are just as fantastic. I only had it once, but I think about it every time I go.

Update: I finally ordered off of the main menu. It’s a pricey menu, but there are many options. I ended up with their version of a Caesar salad and gumbo ya ya. Ya know, a soup and a salad. The salad was good. I enjoyed that it had Brussels and kale. The gumbo was actually pretty underwhelming. I also got the Espresso Martini also the first time I ordered a non-happy hour drink. It was good, leaning much more dessert-y. I honestly just preferred everything I’d tried on the happy hour food and drink menu, for prices and flavor.

Overall: A great happy hour option in the city. Even though it is only at the bar, it’s full service up there, and they have a decent amount of spots at the bar. Voodoo definitely has more whiskey/bourbon-based drinks, so a bit limited for me. However, the drinks I’ve had are done very well. I am a fan of their culinary options. I would come back for the biscuits and beignets alone. I’d be interested in trying their main food menu someday soon.
