Welcome to my next side quest/hyperfixation/thing I’ll be writing about. There was a time, in my youths, I wanted to be a pop star. Didn’t we all? … No? …Maybe just me? I was home alone a lot. I would BELT out with music videos. Anyone here alive when The Box was on cable TV? It was my after-school, at-home activity. On rare occasions, I’d do it even if my brother or grandma were there. And if you are wondering… What they were subject to find out… your girl cannot sing! But you couldn’t tell my younger self anything. I still go all out in my car alone. Not in front of my dog, though. He doesn’t deserve to be subject to that.
Since I was mainly listening to the songs that popped up on TV or on the radio, I’ve only listened to very few albums in their entirety. I was only listening to the top hits. I’ve always leaned towards pop, rap, hip-hop, and R&B, with some alternative/punk thrown into the mix. Those are still the main genres I listen to. I was pretty young to really be drawn to the lyricism or anything deep like that. Yet, music was a comfort. Similar, yet distinct from what TV/movies did for me. That is my other form of comfort, escape, and many hours of alone time.
Somehow, I still end up listening to the same old songs, with some new ones that get added to the rotation with time. Somehow, I still only know singles from almost all the artists I listened to. There are a few random albums I have heard fully through. Like Britney’s Oops, I did it again! CD, I was gifted and loved. For sure, a Jonas Brothers album. The only Maroon 5 album I cared about – Songs About Jane. There are more, but not as many as I’d like.
So now I want to rewind. Go back to the artists I loved those singles from. The artists I always heard about, but didn’t have access to back then. Listen to records in their entirety. Pay attention to the lyrics. Appreciate the production. Understand the full vision. And in turn, slow down a bit. Be fully present.
What are my qualifications? LOL. As with everything on this page, I have none. These are all posts on things that interest me. I get to explore, learn, and have some fun.
If you’re interested, join me to rewind. The first record will be the highly regarded The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
