A few weeks ago, I started the year with a Tarot 101 class hosted at The Black Rabbit in downtown Clermont. I want to do and try things that seem interesting or could just be a fun time. One of my friends bought me a tarot deck a couple years ago, it’s a gorgeous deck, but I really know nothing about tarot. It’s just fascinating. The class was cute and chill. We were taught about the major and minor arcana. A super, beginner friendly class. Still a long way around really understanding it, but it’s good fun.
The night of the class, there happened to be a food truck event in town too. They were just setting up when I got there and of course afterwards, I scoped things out to grab a bite before I went home. It was starting to rain, so I scoped what was close and got drawn into a big teal bus. I didn’t catch the name of the business, but I saw that it was Jamaican food. It had been years since I had jerk chicken. I had a bad experience once and thought I didn’t like jerk chicken. Similar experience to me and halal chicken and rice. Ever since then I’d stay away, but this bus made me want to give it another try.
I ordered the jerk chicken plate which came with two sides. There really was no question, I knew I wanted the rice and beans plus the mac and cheese. After escaping the rain, I immediately gave it quick try before eating a full portion at home. Safe to say, I am a fan of jerk chicken now. It was so well seasoned, flavorful and juicy. The craziest part? I don’t have a favorite part of the meal, both sides were just as amazing. The rice was fluffy and soft and also had a great flavor, and it wasn’t just the beans. Probably one of my favorite rice dishes. I’m so used to eating rice with a bunch of other things. But I could have eaten this rice and beans side alone as a full meal. And that mac and cheese? I need to figure out how to make that. That’s the only way I want it. Most of the time I make mac and cheese, it ends up very think. This was creamy and delicious. I couldn’t stop eating it all.
I did eventually stop eating, because I was full, not because I wanted to. I had enough to break it up into 3-4 meals, light meals, mixed with other things, but still. It held up, great reheated and all. At lunch at work, my lunch buddies asked where it was from because it looked so good. I assured them it was delicious, but was surprised I had no idea where it was from. Just that it came from a big teal bus. They tried to search for it on the internets, but they couldn’t find it. Not that I would have been able to tell them without the bus reference. I ended up looking at my credit card records and finally found the place! Allan’s Jerk Shack!
Now that I know what it is, I can get more! I won’t always know where that big teal bus is. But fear not! There is a physical location! I will definitely check it out, unless I happen upon the bus again!
For a random find, I was blown away. This may sound crazy. Everything I’ve eaten in this new year as been absolutely amazing. I’ve been cooking at home more, but even the things I’ve indulged in ordering out. It’s all been so satisfying and amazing. I feel like last year I was going to all the new spots, the places I kept seeing recommended on socials. Some of the places were very expensive. I ate great food, but I was missing…. The love in and of the food. I hope to continue to enjoy and savor all the food I have the privilege to try.
