It’s Not That Deep | Demi Lovato | Records on Rewind

The last Records on Rewind was covering the second artist I’ll be seeing live this year, RAYE. This one highlights the latest album from Demi Lovato, It’s Not That Deep. I almost didn’t make it to this concert. When there was a reschedule, it seemed like I wasn’t going. Then one of my friends mentioned she was interested and available on the new date, so we got tickets. For that Joe Jonas surprise alone, it was worth it!

Before the concert, I of course needed to listen to the album on repeat. And it’s a pretty short album. Another album that’s a great run time for a drive into/out of work.

The Stats

  • Release Date: November 21, 2025
  • 11 Tracks, 1 Bonus, No Features!
  • Run Time: 42 minutes

First Impressions

Fast: It’s catchy, upbeat – a great choice as a fun first track. Definitely sets the tone for this album. Much more electro dance pop than the previous music I’ve heard of hers.

Here All Night: Similar beat and vibe to the first song. I don’t know how intentional it was, but I like that the vibe of the song matches the lyrics. As in, it’s a breakup song, but instead of wallowing in it, it’s about wanting to dance it out and turn the ‘pain into pleasure’. It feels like the type of song you would jam out to for that purpose. I’d like to think it was intentional, which makes me really like this song.

Frequency: The beginning of the song reminds me of “Femininomenon” by Chappell Roan. Then the rest is right on par with the last couple of songs. Giving the honeymoon stage of a relationship, hot and sexy.

Let You Go: Another catchy song. It’s more traditional pop over the last few that leaned EDM. (If I’m getting these genres confused, please let me know in the comments!). I did enjoy the emotional maturity of this song. That understanding that something could have been amazing, even if it was just for a moment in time. That not everything good needs to last forever.

Sorry to Myself: Spoiler Alert: This is my favorite song on the album. I love the accountability and grace she shows in the song. From the start, I really related to this song:

I could point fingers at everyone else
But sooner or later, it lands on myself
My mistakes have made mistakes of their own

And then the pre-chorus…

I was the king of pain
I always found a new way to complain
And they say, “When you gonna change, honey?
When you gonna face it?

Well, Miss Lovato, way to strike a chord. I mean, I may have felt a bit too seen. A vulnerable track. One, I think a lot of people will get healing from.

Little Bit: Another fun, flirty song. Nothing serious to write home about, but a catchy song to dance to.

Say It: Behind this catchy song, I feel seen. I definitely am someone who has a hard time asking for what I want, hoping others will show up. Recently, in a therapy session, I was asked what I think my love language is. And Words of Affirmation was up there for me. So this song hits exactly that feeling. It’s not that we don’t know… But some of us want and, by some, need to hear it.

In My Head: I won’t lie ya’ll, when I saw this song name, my mind went blank. Then I went to check my notes, and I wrote, “filler song to me.” Felt too much like the same as previous songs. It didn’t stand out.

Kiss: Back to the electro pop, sexy, fun vibe of Fast and Frequency. I like this one, but again, nothing of note.

Before I Knew You: By this point, a lot of the album was sounding the same to me. I wrote in my first impression notes that I would rather have a couple of ballads in place of these one-note pop songs. The theme of this song could have been turned into a power ballad.

Ghost: The closest we got to a ballad, but not really. It was the only slower song on the album for sure. And her voice sounded incredible. I get it. As in the lyrics, I get it. But I don’t relate. If my love died, I don’t want them to haunt me, and vice versa. If I were the first one to go, I’d want them to move on and be happy. And if it was them, I don’t want to be freaked out thinking he was haunting me the rest of my life. Like maybe a sign here or there that they are peacefully watching over me. But yeah, not the memento for me.

Joshua Tree: I didn’t realize this was a bonus track. I was pissed the album ended with this song. But knowing it’s a bonus, I’m less annoyed. Ghost makes sense as the closer. And to be honest, I could have done without this song. It was just kinda like TMI. Again, if we were getting bonus tracks, give me some ballads, girl!

The Rewind Recap

I have seen Demi Lovato in concert once before, for the Tell Me You Love Me tour. Aside from that Joe Jonas cameo, I preferred that album and show. That style is more up my alley, with an R&B vibe, which suits her voice. sowell.

As you can see from the first impressions, it’s a super pop-y album, both mainstream and EDM. I do like that you can tell with this music she’s in a much happier place. Which makes me so happy for her. Listening to the album, I really enjoyed the first half. The second half felt as though it was repeating itself. Again, I really wanted a couple of ballads. I know those songs usually have a sadder tone, but it would have been cool to have a hopeful ballad. With the vocals on that girl, I was disappointed we didn’t get more.

I spoiled it earlier. Sorry to Myself was my favorite song, no competition. A TikTok popped up saying how this song should have been. one of her main singles, and I couldn’t agree more. I don’t even know which songs they chose as singles. I remember the album dropping, and then I haven’t heard anything since. I only started listening to the album when I planned to go to the concert. So I agree with that TikTok-er, her team should have planned the single releases better. And for that matter, this album should have been a spring/summer release. Do I know anything about release dates? No. But this album has a summer feel. One you want to sweaty dance to. Feels like it got lost in the holiday season.

And at the concert, we were reaching the end. She said she was on the last song, and I told my friend, I’m sad she didn’t do my favorite. And my friend was like… “Yeah, but that’s a bit too deep”. The opposite of this album’s theme. But then she closed out the concert with it. She did one of her older upbeat tracks after, but I was so happy she closed it out with my favorite. It makes me think she knows that song is the real star of the album.

That song is really the highlight of the album for me. The first 4 tracks + Say It are the other songs I’ve gone back to on repeat. So I’d say Say It would be #2, and the others are tied at third.

If you are looking for a fun, flirty, dance-pop album, this is a good option. I would definitely listen to it again. There was nothing groundbreaking in terms of lyrics, production, and, most disappointing to me, her vocals. I hope we get an album at some point where she really pushes and showcases her vocal abilities.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Next up is RAYE’s new album, THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.
