The Atmosphere: I have been a few times, and always to the Park Ave location. It’s very cutesy inside. Pretty, sleek, and a tad gaudy. I always love looking at all the beautiful desserts in the casing at the front of the shop. Both times I dined in, I was seated at the wall booth. Just enough space for 2. The majority of my visits have been a pickup and back out on the street.
The Menu: The first few times I’d gone, I tried their matcha and dessert to go. I tried their seasonal berry matcha. Much more milk than matcha. It was so sweet I couldn’t finish it. One of my friends really enjoys their matchas, especially the strawberry matcha.
A couple of months ago, I had brunch with my friend here after a fire drill at Briarpatch derailed our original plans. I was in the mood for something savory and ordered the Southern breakfast bowl. I can’t lie, it just wasn’t for me. The egg was the most disappointing. It was an odd ‘souffle’ triangle. I don’t know how to explain… it all tasted like premade, reheated items. I did rather enjoy the creme brulee cortado. A fun drink, activity, and the cortado was solid. Very sweet, but that was to be expected. My friend ordered the buttermilk pancakes, which she said tasted like McDonald’s hotcakes in a good way. They also looked picturesque.
The saving grace for me is indeed the desserts, which I believe are their forte. During one visit, I ordered the creme brulee donut, which was a solid donut. I waited a bit too long, cause the crackly top got a bit goopy, but the flavor was all there. Most recently, I went with my friend, who enjoys the matchas, to an activity they host called Cakeistry. For $20, you get to ‘paint’ a pretty well-sized slice of cake. The activity was a bit lackluster in the sense that they literally just give you a cake and you do whatever. I was hoping for a bit of instruction. I was hoping for a piping lesson, but there was none of that. The cake, though, was fantastic. A super light, moist vanilla bean cake with buttercream and a touch of raspberry jam.
If I need a sweet treat, I’ll probably drop by. But aside from that, not my first stop on Park Ave.
