I had plans to try Superica on Cinco de Mayo. I knew it was a gamble, but my friend found a reservation. Unfortunately, as expected, they were crazy busy. After we waited well past our reservation, we went over to Sixty Vines across the street instead. A couple of months later, we gave it another try. This time, no wait!
The Parking: It is a pretty small lot, shared with a couple of other businesses. On Cinco De Mayo, there was no shot, but after one or two loops, the second time, we were able to find spots. The good thing is that behind the dedicated lot, there is another lot. I’m not actually sure if it’s overflow or dedicated to something else, but we were able to park in there too.
The Atmosphere: I don’t know how this is going to come off… But it quite literally looks and feels like the definition of Tex-Mex. To be honest… I don’t know if I like that. The crazy thing is, they are rather huge, so I don’t know why there was so much difficulty getting us seated the first time around, especially when we had a reservation. I was rather hangry that day, so yes, I am a bit bitter.
It’s spacious and loud. And rather aesthetic, in a Tex-Mex-y way. Leaning more upscale, modern Tex.
The Food: There are complimentary chips and salsa(S). I liked the variety of salsas, just didn’t love any of them in particular. The chips were nice and crisp, yet a bit salty. We started with drinks, and I went for a simple marg, the Tommy, to be specific. It was solid, nothing to write home about.
For the mains, I ordered the shrimp tacos, and my friend was recommended to try the Tacos Al Carbón. My shrimp Diablo tacos were solid. Coming costra style, which is a tortilla with crisped grilled cheese. The shrimp wasn’t as spicy as I expected, but still flavorful. That crisped grilled cheese made it great. And it came with a side of rice and beans. I liked the beans; I didn’t love the rice.
My friend originally wanted the classic crispy tacos, and I wish she went with those, cause she didn’t love her tacos. The chicken itself was underwhelming. The tortilla was interesting, because it tasted like a homemade roti, and that was nostalgic for me. I felt like her dish had a homier vibe, which isn’t a bad thing. And when it’s not what you were hoping for, it can be underwhelming.
Overall, I thought the food was decent. The prices are a bit high in my opinion for the portions and quality. The matches you can take as a souvenir, though, are great quality! I wish I picked up more…
Something about the vibe of the place isn’t up my alley. This may sound rude, but it almost has a forced uppity feel. Kind of puts me off. It’s one of those places you don’t need to go out of your way to try. If you are in the mood for Mexican and in the area, go for it.
