Downtown Winter Garden | A Love Letter

When I first moved down to Orlando over a decade ago, I would visit different little towns on the weekend to get to know the city. One of my instant favorites was Downtown Winter Garden. It reminded me of a cute, quaint, homey little town back home near Philly, called Media. With cute shops, good restaurants, and a great farmer’s market, it was the kind of neighborhood I wanted to be in.

In the last few weeks, some local businesses in town began posting that they would be closing. Some have already closed by the time I’ve posted this. The decision was not by choice, not really. From what I have read, some businesses could not afford the owners’ increased rent, while others were not even given the option to renew or extend. Even if these businesses weren’t suffering, having any kind of rent increase is a hit in this economy. And to be booted without any negotiation is absolutely ignorant.

Here is the list of the beloved businesses that have or will be closing:

Driftwood Market

Polka Dotz

Robyn Michelle Salon

Ruby & Rust

Three Birds Cafe

Writer’s Block Bookstore

These are all places I’ve been and frequented. Robyn Michelle Salon was the only place that would actually dye my sharp black hair to add some fun colors. Without doubt, I always stop into Ruby & Rust and Writer’s Block every time I go into town. Always with the intention of window-shopping, but almost always finding something I must have. Each place added so much to this community.

I am just so disheartened by it all. I chose to live near this part of town because I loved this area and these great local shops so much. It feels like the nonsense of the larger country… The power, the greed… Is coming to our small towns. I have not seen what is coming in place of these shops. I can only hope that, if anything, other small businesses can be given a chance and not some big chain. I understand things change and evolve. For once, I wished it were done in consideration of the community and not just for the few with deep pockets. Call me naive.

I have the privilege of choosing where I spend my money (for the most part), and I have stopped giving to many big industries or individuals I know directly oppose the values I stand for. That’s not always possible. Sometimes it’s about convenience, and in these times, we have to be practical about cost. And listen, I am far from perfect here. Still learning every day, and oftentimes, I am lazy. When possible, I try to support local shops that align with the community I want to be part of. It’s no small list of shops. A huge part of the community was impacted. People who have been part of the town have built relationships and their livelihoods. A few of these stores have locations in other parts of Orlando. Others are popping up at local events and finding their next homes. If you are able, support these businesses as they navigate this time.

Here’s to hoping the lovely little town keeps its charm.
